Karlsruhe Institute of Technology - Institut für Mikrostrukturtechnik

KIT

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is a higher education and research organisation with about 8000 employees and 18,500 students.

The Nano- and Microsystem programat KIT/IMT aims at developing application-tailored solutions at the interface of microsystem engineering and nanotechnology giving major impulses to technical innovations in a variety of industrial sectors. It contributes to implement new physical, chemical or biological effects and functionalities as well as novel materials in technical systems used in a multiplicity of industrial and socially relevant application fields. The interdisciplinary approach is based on a pool of technologies comprising mechanical, optical, magnetic, fluidic, electrical, materials science, and information technology competences.

In Microsystem Technology the focus is on non silicon materials processing and application oriented development in bio- and micro fluidics as well as in photonics. About 30 people are working in the photonics area covering the entire development chain from simulation and designing, prototyping and mastering up to small series fabrication. The focus of IMT is on polymer micro optics fabricated by lithography and laser processing as well as by micro replication techniques in view of industrial mass fabrication. IMT is the worldwide leading institute in the so called LIGA process which offers the possibility to fabricate precise high aspect ratio micro structures with optical performance. Thus, it has outstanding expertise in high aspect ratio lithography as well as in micro moulding techniques.
