Université de Franche-Comté - (UFC) Département MN2S (Micro Nano Sciences & Systèmes), FEMTO-ST

The UFC (Université de Franche-Comté) participates in the proposal through the Département Micro Nano Sciences & Systèmes (MN2S) of FEMTO-ST.

The Institute FEMTO-ST contains five research departments specialised in optics, mechanics, microelectronics, Microsystems and material sciences representing a potential of 535 scientists. FEMTO-ST is a joint research unit (UMR 6174) under trusteeship of the CNRS (Centre National pour la Recherche Scientifique), UFC (Université de Franche-Comté), ENSMM (Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Mécanique et des Microtechniques) and UTBM (Université Technologique de Belfort et Montbéliard). FEMTO-ST is a Carnot Institute in the fields of Engineering Sciences. FEMTO-ST is one of five national technological centres in micro- and nanotechnology (French RTB programme).

The origin of the Department MN2S (former Laboratoire de Physique et Métrologie des Oscillateurs) is the Laboratory of Atomic Clock, which has been founded in 1958 by Prof. A. Kastler (Nobel Prize in Physics) and Prof. J. Uebersfeld. In 1974 LPMO became a pure unity of research of CNRS. In January 2008 (restructuration of FEMTO-ST) the MOEMS group of Dr. C. Gorecki, participating to this proposal, left the Département d’Optique of FEMTO-ST and joined MN2S. The research activity of this group focus on the development of miniature optical sensors made by using batch-fabrication processes (silicon technology). This activity combines the integrated optics with micromechanical structures and microoptics, offering new integration potentials for sensing applications and also atomic clock applications. MN2S is also well-known for its competences in the fields of physics, electronics devices and systems, nanosciences, and, on the other hand for its competence and its know-how in micro-manufacturing, integrated and assembled microsystems.

About 100 persons are currently working at MN2S, contributing to a Master, especially in two specialities: Microsystems and Time and Frequency.

The leading group for ACTMOST is the team Microsystèmes Multiphysiques of MN2S, lead by Dr. C. Gorecki.
